Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

The variety of Curcuma that grows in Peru is called “Curcuma Longa”, and takes the name “Palillo” and its main crop is in the Peruvian jungle, recent studies of this variety indicate that it is rich in bisdemetoxicurcumina, an anti-oxidant that can fight the accumulation of proteins that are stored in the brain fighting the dreaded Alzheimer’s.


Originally from south-east Asia, the Indian peninsula distributed in the tropics and in America is traditionally grown in southern Mexico and the Andes.

Geographical distribution

Turmeric is adapted to humid areas, being a plant native to Asia that has been used for almost 7 thousand years to cure various types of ailments that affected the population. In Peru it is cultivated in high and low jungle; in the condition of a wild plant, it is distributed in almost the entire Peruvian jungle. The highest concentration of crops is found in the departments of Ayacucho. Cusco and Ucayali (Yarinacocha).
