Maca is an herbaceous plant native to the Andes of Peru and Bolivia, where it is cultivated both for its nutritional qualities and for its reputation that its roots have properties that increase fertility and improve libido.

The Andean maca closely resembles a radish in shape; however, it is slightly larger in size. The root is three to six centimeters wide and 4.7 centimeters long.

It is cultivated at an altitude of 2700 to 4300 meters above sea level, and has been cultivated in the Peruvian Andes for almost 2,600 years.

Geographical distribution

La maca es una planta herbácea nativa de los Andes del Perú y Bolivia, donde se cultiva tanto por sus cualidades nutritivas como por su fama que sostiene que sus raíces poseen propiedades que aumentan la fertilidad y mejoran la líbido.

La maca andina se asemeja mucho a un rábano en forma, sin embargo, es ligeramente más grande en tamaño. La raíz es de tres a seis centímetros de ancho y 4,7 centímetros de longitud.

Se cultiva a una altitud de 2700 a 4300 metros sobre el nivel del mar, y ha sido cultivada en los Andes peruanos durante casi 2.600 años.
